TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Updates

Mentoring and training in full swing As we begin the new calendar year, the Institute takes pride in the accomplishments attained in 2024 in our training and development initiatives, and looks forward to achieving even more in the year ahead. The IHEEM Mentor training held in November gathered professionals looking to support and guide mentees

into their future career aspirations. The session, which was held at the Hilton Metropole Birmingham, provided training to members as IHEEM continues to expand its database of available mentors. For the year ahead, the Institute will roll out a full training calendar, with opportunities open to members throughout the year, both in terms of mentoring, and involvement in wider Institute activities, as well as running mentor drop-in sessions to support those engaged with this responsibility. A full piece on the IHEEM Mentor Scheme will follow in the February 2025 edition of Health Estate Journal.

Career guidance and STEM outreach The Institute continues its STEM outreach with a career guidance session at Exeter Mathematics School on 28 January. Students at the event will have the opportunity to hear both from external speakers and IHEEM representatives. The latter will include former President and Council member, Alison Ryan, and South West Branch Chair and Council Representative, Martyn Jeffery. The various speakers will discuss their professional background, the experiences that shaped their career progression, and what led them to choose engineering-related studies. The purpose of this talk is to inspire and motivate the next generation of engineers to pursue studies and career opportunities in STEM subjects, and to enable attendees to find out how the Institute supports students and apprentices through their professional development and accreditation. This delivery reinforces IHEEM’s commitment to fostering STEM skills, empowering students to pursue impactful careers in healthcare engineering, and strengthening the workforce of tomorrow. IHEEM is developing its STEM strategy, and centering inspiration and development of future leaders into its next 5 Year Business Plan.

Individual or Affiliate members interested in supporting the Institute’s STEM agenda, or wishing to register their interest in any of the aforementioned training opportunities, should contact Head Office at training@iheem.org.uk.
