Strategic Estates Management TP will replace ADBE counterpart
Are you interested in joining the Steering Group for ‘a new, innovative’ knowledge hub? Over the next few months, the IHEEM Technical Platform known as ADBE will refocus and become the Strategic Estates Management TP. Initially, it is hoped to attract IHEEM members to guide and steer the initiative as it gains momentum. Paul Mercer, the group’s Chair, said: “This is a pivotal initiative for the Institute as we open up the ‘EM’ initials of our acronym. To focus on the strategic – the visionary, the forward-looking – aspects of the healthcare estate will provide a forum for developing excellence and structured approaches to this often under-resourced area.”
As a starting point, the new group hopes to explore best practice models for preparing briefs, for engaging stakeholders in meaningful ways, appropriate use of internal and external
IHEEM community, and, as the group settles in, to open up a wider supporting group of professionals and colleagues ‘to ensure dialogue from across the widest range of skills and interests within the healthcare community’. The Strategic Estates Management TP
plans to deliver a programme of seminars and webinars, and also to take some allied IHEEM training courses under its wing. To find out more, or if you would like

Veteran water expert leads new consultancy
Harper Water Management Group is a new water consultancy combining the engineering knowledge and experience of David Harper (IHEEM Authorising Engineer – Water) and Engineer (BSc), Stephen Flatman, with the water hygiene expertise of Dr Catherine Whapham. With over 20 years’ experience supporting
water safety teams in both the NHS and non-healthcare industries globally, Mark Conway is the other key member of this ‘technically-led’ team. Launched in 2021, the consultancy became an IHEEM Company Affiliate last year, and immediately supported clients following COVID-19 restrictions, with resulting water stagnation throughout their buildings. Faced with mounting problems following ‘quick-fix treatments’, Harper Water offered ‘the multidisciplinary approach needed to support clients in taking the next steps to improve water system quality and remain compliant with the law’. Being fully independent, and not affiliated to any chemical disinfection or other solution-provider, the team delivers impartial advice to clients, alongside a bespoke plan of actions to comply with national guidelines, ‘enabling a faster and sustainable route

to successful long-term outcomes’. While targeting improved water quality, Harper Water’s goal is to reinforce/strengthen the client team’s know- how through education, discussion on rationale, and actions for risk mitigation and documentation support. Centralised water management documentation fosters a
collaborative approach, while a multi- skilled cross-functional team encourages information exchange and increased transparency within the client team. The experienced team is engaged not only in times of water quality crisis and outbreaks, for Legionella and Pseudomonas aeruginosa risk audits, Water Safety Plans, or sampling regimens, but also for reviewing new building projects, carbon zero strategies, and multi-drug resistant microorganism contamination management. The London-headquartered company is currently focused on meeting UK client needs, but has extensive international experience, and plans expanding in the near future. Veteran, David Harper, pictured speaking in Melbourne in 2019, said: “I’m thrilled to lead this new venture with a talented, specialist team combining engineering, hygiene, and microbiology expertise.”
