INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITY
n Establishing a Working Group to consider how best to use some of IFHE- EU’s financial reserves for the benefit of its membership.
n Encouraging more participation in research, presenting at European Congresses, and Working Groups etc.
COVID’s impact on Spanish event Due to the COVID restrictions, the hosting of the 9th IFHE-EU Congress in October 2021 at the Gijón Conference and Exhibition Centre in Gijón, Northern Spain, by the country’s national member organisation, the Asociación Española de Ingenieria Hospitalaria (AEIH), proved problematic. David Whiteley explained: “Firstly, the IFHE worldwide Congress in Rome (planned for 2020) had to be postponed until January 2021, which, coupled with the uncertainty caused by the pandemic, left very little time for AEIH colleagues to organise such an event. Secondly, because of the restrictions (with colleagues from some European countries actually being instructed not to travel), very little international attendance was possible. Notwithstanding these issues, Pedro Manuel Lopez Redondo, Luis Gonzalez Sterling, and their team, pulled off a remarkable feat and hosted a highly successful hybrid (both digital and face-to-face) 38th National Congress, which provided a platform for IFHE-EU to also host its ExCo and National Council meetings.” At the ExCo meeting in Gijón on
29 October, as part of the handover and in accordance with protocol, the outgoing President produced a report of achievements during the previous two years, the details of which can be viewed on Google Drive. Pedro Manuel Lopez
Redondo accepted the Presidency on behalf of AEIH, and introduced himself. David Whiteley explained: “Pedro described his role as director of Infrastructure and Finance at the University Hospital in Valencia in Spain, and his 20+ years of healthcare experience. “He committed to continuing the work,
and to producing an open proposal for discussion in the first few weeks of his tenure (see Google Drive facility). At the IFHE-EU National Council meeting, he gave feedback from the Congress, which was appropriately themed ‘Breathe’. He confirmed that the Congress had been a considerable success for AEIH, attracting both local and national media coverage. The location and venue had been specifically chosen from a space, ventilation, and COVID safety perspective, attracting some 1,300 registrants and 300 commercial exhibitors, so – given the circumstances – a huge success.
A new post established “He reiterated his commitment to take IFHE-EU forward during his tenure as President, and established his new ExCo to support him, with an extra post designated to continue the strengthening of the Group’s relationship with IFHE worldwide. ExCo meetings will be planned in the near future. Details of the ExCo selected by Pedro Manuel Lopez can be seen from the Minutes on Google Drive, but a special welcome was given to Douwe Kiestra, representing NVTG in the Netherlands, and a very special ‘thank you’ to Juha Rantasalo, representing SSTY/AFHE in Finland, for his many years’ service and commitment to the IFHE European Group.”
10th IFHE-EU Congress in Paris now being planned
The next IFHE-EU Congress is planned for 15-16 June 2023 at a venue in the Business district in Paris. This Congress will coincide with the 63rd national Congress of IHF, with the French capital chosen due to its excellent and sustainable transport links both within France and from across the whole of Europe (see the IFHE-EU website for more details, including how to submit papers and participate further).
