to integrate a reliable ventilator alarm solution into Basildon University Hospital’s existing IPiN Evolution nurse call system to address this widespread issue. The hospital has trusted Wandsworth Healthcare’s nurse call solutions since 1970, and has utilised the robust, cost-effective IPiN Evolution nurse call system for the past decade. The easy-to-use IPiN system is the UK’s first fully IP nurse call system, and has enabled crystal clear patient calling and seamless communication for the hospital. Efficient reporting and administration made possible with the IPiN INSiTE platform have also enhanced operations, safety, and patient experience within the premises. The hospital staff and management
team have been astounded by the phenomenal flexibility and superior performance of the equipment, and how this has heightened the level of patient care delivered. However, given the breadth and increasing demands of the pandemic, new functionality was required for the IPiN system which would prompt immediate action in the case of ventilator removal or misuse.

needed a quality, remote alarm system as the side rooms of the ward have dual doors, which reduce alarm noise for staff. With the ward currently holding 28 beds, with eight located in the side rooms, alarm efficiency was critical. The dedicated team at Wandsworth Healthcare was tasked with the delivery of a reliable alarm system that would instantly alert hospital staff to ventilator failure, removal, or misuse, to effectively safeguard patients. This would be made available through the network on the hospital’s IPiN system, that was designed and manufactured by Wandsworth Healthcare to be fully adaptable to any future changes, and compliant with any existing or new technologies. Display alarms for the IPiN’s nurse station were also needed to allow 24-hour monitoring of the ventilators and prompt response times. The hospital’s nurse station unit with its tailored IPiN system has allowed quick identification of calls and call type for the staff at Basildon Hospital via a clear touchscreen dashboard. The system has ensured that calls could be monitored effectively, and that the relevant member of staff can be assigned to the correct
call for a more organised workflow. The introduction of the new alarm functionality to the nurse station has allowed ventilators to be supervised more closely during the pandemic, where previously this would not have been possible on that level.

Compatible with all Respironics-approved cables, the IPiN aux outlet allowed arms to be easily installed directly onto ventilators at the point of insertion, for a rapid, unified solution. Should a ventilator cord be pulled out, the alarm sounds to alert staff instantaneously, minimising the risk for patients.
