Tisan’s Olebond products are produced via


reactive extrusion processing technology in which maleic anhydride is grafted onto a base polymer chain.


Olebond 7401 HH grade, based on PPH with high MAH content, is used as a coupling agent between polymer and fillers. Its functional groups enhance polarity of PP and improve considerably the bonding between PPH and glass fibre or mineral fillers. Incorporation of 2% Olebond to PPH 30% reinforced with glass fibre greatly increases tensile strength and izod impact values when it is compared with other products without compatibi- liser, said Tisan. Olebond 7402 CL-HH is a chemically modified PE with high MAH content for improving the interphase adhesion of PE to other polymers and flame additives. Tisan said its R&D work has resulted in “extraordinary reactivity and compatibility” and is mostly utilised in the fabrication of cables.


Coupling fibres Fibre reinforcements can enhance the performance of recycled plastics, but achieving good results during processing can be challenging because degradation products and residual additives, such as UV stabilisers or processing aids, can interfere with standard coupling agents, said BYK. A solution is BYK’s SCONA TSPP 10213 GB, which has a high grafting level of over 2% that enables good mechanical properties even at low dosage. The additive, based on a PP copolymer, improves performance in wood-plastic composites, even when typically incompatible PE/PP recyclate mixtures are used as the base. Recycled carbon fibres, increasingly sourced from end-of-life automotive components, are another reinforcement option. Unlike glass fibres, they often lack sizing compatible with PP. Compatibilisers like SCONA can significantly enhance composite strength in such systems, the company reported. Ingenia Polymers received US APR recognition for its InCircle IP 1601 compatibiliser masterbatch for multilayer PE films containing PA and/or EVOH. The recognition indicates that the additives meet or exceed APR’s requirements for design for recyclability. Ingenia has recently completed a

study to demonstrate the performance of the compatibiliser in PP/EVOH/PA systems. Ingenia is also working with Recyclass in Europe


“to expand the opportunity for film producers and converters in Europe to take advantage of the perfor- mance that InCircle IP1601 brings to the recyclability of multi-material flexible packaging,” said Dale McCormick, Business Manager, Masterbatch for Flexible Packaging at Ingenia Polymers. “With excellent performance in both PE and PP based barrier films, there is an opportunity to increase the supply of recycle materials in the market.” The company opened a new facility in Obern-


burg, Germany this April, which is the company’s first in Europe. The manufacturing site will supply the InCircle line for film producers as well as Ingenia’s other polyolefin additive masterbatch products; titanium dioxide, engineered white, and black masterbatches; polymer additive blends for resin producers; and proprietary and toll compounds. In addition to allowing recycling of polyolefin multilayer barrier films, Ingenia has tested and found success with its compatibiliser in PE/PET lami- nates. “While APR protocol precludes the recycling of PET containing flexible packaging into the PE film recycle stream, due to typical recycle line processing temperatures below necessary tempera- ture to melt PET, converters can recycle their PE/PET laminate scrap internally and produce films applica- ble for other applications when they add InCircle IP1601 Compatibiliser at the scrap film extrusion/ pelletisation stage and run at temperatures that melt the PET component,” McCormick said. Gabriel-Chemie’s MaxiLoop range of compati- bilisers was launched last year with ten different formulations designed for various recycling applications. The additives improve miscibility,
