POST-INDUSTRIAL RECYCLING | INNOVATION

PIR advances: From factory floor to future fabric
Developments in recycling of production waste and use of post-industrial recycled (PIR) content over the past year have covered a range of areas, including textiles, injection moulding and film extrusion. Progress has been spurred by regulation, innovation and application development. On 20 May 2024, the European Union imple- mented a new Waste Shipments Regulation to ensure responsible waste management within and outside the EU. The regulation imposes stricter controls on waste exports, particularly targeting plastic waste, to prevent environmental degrada- tion in non-EU countries. It also streamlined procedures for waste shipments within the EU, facilitating recycling processes and promoting a circular economy. Whilst in the US, a bipartisan bill was presented to the House of Representatives in September, nominated by Congressmen Larry Bucshon (Republican-Indiana) and Don Davis (Democratic- North Carolina), a move that was applauded by

industry bodies including the IAPD and American Chemistry Council, and companies including Berry Global.
Bucshon, a lead sponsor of the bill, said: “The
Accelerating a Circular Economy for Plastics and Recycling Innovation Act will help us do better by modernising our recycling infrastructure to harness innovative technologies and recycle greater amounts of plastic waste that otherwise would end up in the landfill or in the environment and reuse them.”
Susan Avery, CEO of IAPD, said: “Our country
lacks the infrastructure to recycle plastics, and IAPD applauds this legislation for addressing the much- needed solution of plastics recycling. IAPD sup- ports both advanced and mechanical recycling. Both technologies are needed as we transition plastic manufacturing and plastic recycling from a linear model to a circular model. We are particularly pleased that Sec. 3 of the bill defines advanced recycling as a manufacturing process and distin-
