We are excited to launch the 2025 edition of our popular Plastics Recyclers in Europe database.
Evren Akfirat, Business Unit Manager – Databases shares some key findings and top level data
Europe faces both significant challenges and promising opportunities in plastics recycling. Despite advances in sustainable waste management, persistent issues hinder the full potential of recycling. The financial viability of the system is critical to Europe's efforts to enhance and expand recycling capabilities.
Countries like Germany, Italy, the UK, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands have robust recycling systems, while others struggle with lower recycling rates. The industry has faced vulnerabilities due to external factors such as rising energy prices, stringent regulations, and competition from cheaper imports, leading to announcements of plant closures, such as Cedo Recycling in the Netherlands.
We speak with Evren for insight into the new database and the data contained.
Evren, please explain a little more about the programme of work to update this database
Our databases have been meticulously compiled through telephone interviews for almost 40 years. This method ensures that the information provided is both reliable and thoroughly researched, GDPR compliant, and helps our customers grow their businesses. AMI stands out as the only company in the plastics industry that employs the telephone interviewing methodology. Each year, we work to update the records of approximately 8,000 sites, a substantial and challenging task.
The undertaking has become even more demanding since the pandemic due to new conditions that have emerged. We have observed that fewer people respond to telephone inquiries, as many are working remotely. To reach each production site, our researchers often have to make numerous calls, which can take days, weeks, or even months in some cases. Our researchers dedicated relentless effort over an eight- month period of telephone interviewing to compile unique and verified details, while project managers qualified the data along the way.
We are proud to offer the industry the most reliable information for the plastics mechanical recycling sector in Europe, in the 7th edition of this database. This new edition provides detailed contact and production information for 1,307 plastics recycling plants. It includes comprehensive details about each plant's recycling operations, the types of plastics recycled, machinery used, and production volumes. Additionally, up to four managerial contact names with job titles are provided for targeted communication with the companies.
