plastics accounted for 80% and intermediates 20%. The strategy is ongoing: the
goal for 2020 is for its compounding production to increase and fully balance its PA6 and caprolactam produc- tion. Zobel is clearly pleased with progress so far in the integrated intermediates- polymers-compounds approach. “I consider us to have the
strongest set-up in the industry,” he said, contrasting Lanxess with competitors who have closed caprolactam capacity or are looking to sell their business. Touring the site, it could be seen where some of the 2017 investment is being made. Lanxess is building a new
New highly-filled PA6 compounds
At the media day at its Lillo facility, Lanxess unveiled two new Durethan-brand, flame-retardant polyamide 6 compounds which are highly reinforced with glass fibres. Their flame retardance, high strength and stiffness and good toughness makes them suited to components subject to high mechanical load, such as structural parts in industrial machines that must meet flame retardance requirements, and moulded case circuit breakers. Durethan BKV45FN04 is reinforced with 45% short glass fibres. Its flame retardance package
contains no halogens or red phosphorus. The material passes the UL 94 test, achieving the V-0 classification with test specimens 0.4mm thick. With a CTI A of 600 volts, the material is highly tracking resistant, said Lanxess. The second PA6 compound, which is close to market introduction, contains more than 50% glass
fibres. With its halogen-based flame retardance package, it achieves V-0 (0.75 mm) and 5VA classification in UL 94 testing. The compound’s CTI A tracking resistance is high at 575 °C (PLC 0 on UL Yellow Card).
tower in the oleum plant to replace the previous tower that is 30-40 years’ old. It is being built on-site so that the switchover can be managed for minimal impact on production.
A preventative maintenance programme is decided annually so that investment is targeted accurately at older components and assets before they reach failure point.
Many parts of the facility
have been replaced; work is currently in progress on the steel structure of the cyclohex- ane plant. ❙
