news Asia drove Engel’s growth last year

Engel Group’s sales in the 2016-17 fiscal year were 8.6% higher at €1.36bn, thanks in large part to above average growth in sales to Asia, particularly China and South-East Asia. According to chief sales

officer Dr Christoph Steger, growth in Europe also contin- ued “unchecked”, while demand also increased in North America. This is expected to continue at a lower rate in the current year. Steger added that integrated turnkey systems, incorporating robots and other automation systems, are driving

DME expands in Michigan

DME Company, a Milacron subsidiary, is to invest about $5m and create up to 70 full-time jobs by expanding its site at Greenville, Michigan, US. This follows a recent decision to close a DME facility at Youngwood, Pennsylvania, and consoli- date its mould technology manufacturing and fabrica- tion operations at the Greenville facility. “By consolidating our machining operations into one single US location, we can target our investment funds, building a world- class facility in Greenville to support our growth plans,” said Peter Smith, Milacron DME president and general manager. ❙ www.milacron.com

A production shop, opened in 2013, will be expanded and a new customer technology centre will be built. ❙ www.engelglobal.com

SHI Demag introduces its all-electric IntElect range

Sumitomo SHI Demag Plastics Machinery showed the new IntElect, a new generation of all-electric injection moulding machines, at an in-house event at its site at Schwaig near Nuremberg in Germany on 10-11 May. Developed in cooperation with its parent corporation Sumitomo Heavy Industries, the IntElect is powered by a new generation of highly dynamic drive motors and is said to combine “top-level performance with an outstanding energy footprint”. The company said that the machine would be particularly interesting for manufacturers of structural precision components and of industrial and optical parts. The price gap to hydraulic machines, a factor that has

delayed the wider adoption of all-electrics, is also said to be “significantly” reduced. IntElect is now available in clamping forces of 50, 75, 100, 130 and 180 tonnes, following the introduction of the 50 tonne model at K 2016 and the subsequent addition of the 180 tonne model. The size of the whole range is said to be smaller than its predecessors and on average 10% less than

that of most all-electric machines.

SHI Demag also announced that 2016 was its most successful year ever, with sales rising for the fourth consecutive year to €234m from €231m in 2015. CEO Gerd Liebig added that

incoming orders were 20% higher than turnover in 2016, boosting 2017 capacity. ❙ www.sumitomo-shi-demag.eu
