ring (signature of the brand) which is reflected inside the cap. Italian injection moulder Matic Plast Milano says that it selected Surlyn for this project because it had to create a large ultra-transparent cap with good surface finish and an invisible injection point, all in one process. Some applications require the contents of the
packaging to be completely visible to the custom- er. Spain’s ITC Packaging has collaborated with Milliken Chemical and Belgian in-mould labelling (IML) specialist Verstraete IML to create a new UltraClear food container. ITC Packaging injection moulded the product from NX UltraClear PP made using Milliken’s Millad NX 8000 clarifier, and then labelled it with SuperClear IML from Verstraete IML. As well providing good clarity, the containers are claimed to be lightweight, microwaveable, can be hot-filled and are recyclable. “This solution comes in response to one of our customers’ greatest demands – to achieve more transparent packaging that allows for a clear display of the product with a minimum of visual interference,” says Silvia Oliver, ITC’s Quality Manager. “For this reason, we have teamed up with Verstraete IML and Milliken to produce an IML container with a high degree of transparency.” The companies say that the
aim to create the UltraClear container was driven by the desire to find a glass alternative for packaging a vegetable snack, a healthy product that requires a high degree of transparency to transmit the freshness and naturalness of the product. The resulting product is part of Flexipack, ITC’s standard range of packaging. The material’s transparency is complemented by the use of Verstraete IML’s SuperClear IML label, which is claimed to further enhance the product’s marketing potential. SuperClear IML offers highly transparent areas that create a ‘no-label’ look; good flexibility with no changeover costs or delay; a technique that allows a large number of different IML looks to be created with the same keyline; and the possibility of a ‘floating label’ look with the label being printed only on the upper part of the packaging. Verstraete IML has also been working with injection moulder Polyoak for South African brand Clover on rectangular Barrier IML packaging for Cream O’Naise, a new, creamy mayonnaise product. Polyoak provided the reusable tub with a special shape, while Verstraete IML added associ- ated Barrier IML labels. The novel packaging was

designed to complement the new product. Clover chose IML packaging for the application for a number of reasons. “There has been little or no innovation on the mayonnaise market for some time now,” says Edith Molepo, Senior Brand Manager at Clover. “We thought we should buck that trend by launching a unique product in unique packaging. Cream O’Naise is the only mayonnaise on the market to include cream, which gives it an extra smooth taste and consistency. With its rectan- gular shape and large opening, the
reusable tub immediately draws custom- ers’ eyes to our product on the shelves. It soon became clear that we could only achieve our marketing requirements by using an IML packaging - or more specifi- cally, oxygen barrier IML, because mayonnaise should have a shelf life of at least six months as standard.” The new Barrier IML
packaging offers several advantages. “Barrier IML packaging has similar
oxygen barrier properties to a PET bottle,” says
Ettienne Pretorius, Commer-
cial Manager Dairypack Tubs at Polyoak. “At normal storage temperatures, this means products have a shelf life of at least six months. The IML packaging provides a host of other advantages too: it is dishwasher resistant, which is important for reusable packaging. It is also safe for use in microwaves, and the tubs can be stacked easily, saving customers space. On top of that, this packaging fits perfectly in fridge doors, which is
