ABB agrees that collaborative automation will continue to grow at an even greater rate than traditional industrial robots. “Their simplicity and easy programming removes a key entry barrier to many new potential users such as SMEs who never have used a robot before – this is a substantial market of potential new robot users,” it says. “In addition, collaborative robots ease of use gives them a faster adoption curve than traditional industrial robots.” The company’s range of six-axis robots and injection moulding machine tending systems now includes a pre-engineered function package with a compact design and an intuitive graphic screen to simplify programming and operation. Its new robotic IMM tending function package features software that it claims is easy to use, requiring no knowledge of ABB’s RAPID programming language or indeed any other language. The software also provides easy control of other peripherals of the operation, including fence components, conveyors and cutting devices. The function package can be equipped with


four different robot models (IRB 1200, IRB 1600, IRB 2600 and IRB 4600) with payloads ranging from 5 kg to 60 kg. The compact footprint makes the package easy to integrate into existing lines. ABB has also developed robotic cell solutions that handle secondary operations. These include a cell that places small metal or plastic clips onto a major part just after being unloaded from the moulding machine. It can handle various clip types and sizes. The solution can either be integrated into or separate from the IMM tending operation. When equipped with vision functionality, it can also perform an

immediate quality check of the affixed clips. Star Automation Europe, which is the European


seat of Japanese robot major Star Seiki, says it will launch several novelties during the Plast exhibition taking place in Milan at the end of May. These include the ZXW-VI robots series, which show enhancements over Fx series models. Speeds for example are up by more than 10% for both the ZXW-1000VI and ZXW-1600VI machines, when compared to their predecessors. New SF-NET software allows the user to view information related to production contained inside the robot’s controller, which uploads data to a server in the company network.
