ANTIOXIDANTS AND STABILISERS | ADDITIVES

the company reports. Compounds for packaging may also require UV stabiliser additives that help protect the package and its contents. Sandrine Reboux, Senior Marketing Manager, Personal & Home Care Products at Avient, sees a trend towards transparent PET packaging. “The push for transparent packaging aligns with sustainability targets and recycling guidelines, as opaque PET is difficult to recycle. This trend is particularly strong in the EU and has global implications,” she said.

Rigid packaging It is important that additives do not have a detrimental effect on package recycling. Three UV barrier additives for PET bottles from Avient recently received RecyClass recyclability approval for additives up to 0.15 wt % of the total weight of the packaging, which indicates that the additives at this level have compatibility with the European PET bottle recycling stream. The three additives – Cesa Light Additives FEA0050148 and FEA0050249 and ColorMatrix Ultimate UV 390-1 Light Barrier for PET – were tested by the Institut für Kunststofftechnologie und-recycling (IKTR), according to an adapted version of the RecyClass Recyclability Evaluation Protocol for PET bottles. The additives do not cause yellowing after recycling, which is important for making recycled PET suitable for reuse in transpar- ent bottle applications. Avient ColorMatrix Ultimate UV390 Light Barrier technologies are specifically designed for improved recyclability to allow packaging with higher amounts of rPET to maintain adequate UV barrier functionality and improved

rPET processability, the company reports. A new UV blocking additive from Tosaf, UV9389PE EU, is designed to block UV radiation from 200 nm to 380 nm in thin, transparent food packaging and help protect food from discolora- tion or vitamin and flavor loss, the company says. The additive has high efficiency and low dosage. “Unlike conventional mineral-based products of

this type, the optical properties and in particular the transparency of films finished with UV9389PE EU are almost completely retained,” said Tosaf. Ampacet’s UVBlock 1496 is a UV barrier masterbatch for food and industrial packaging that is an alternative to conventional phenolic benzo- triazole additives, some of which have been added to the European ECHA list of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC), the company says. The new additive is formulated without intentional addition of SVHC and is approved for food contact in Europe and the US. The company says it offers good UV barrier performance in the low UVA and UVB wavelength range.
