focused on colour palettes that are free of heavy metals or other substances that would fall under the EU’s SVHC (substances of very high concern) list. Avient’s ColorForward forecast for 2025, which
was released December 2023, looks at societal trends that are expected to influence consumer preferences. “While the 2024 palette was mostly balanced with colours evenly distributed across the colour spectrum, the 2025 palette predominantly features mid-tone blues, greens, oranges, neutrals, and no yellow,” said Roberto Romanin, Designer at ColorWorks Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) at Avient, in the 2025 forecast announce- ment. “This more subdued colour palette includes some dramatic effects such as copper undertones and material choices that represent the gravity of the challenges we will face. Some moderately brighter colours underline optimism despite the gravity, with both palettes encompassing the feeling of resiliency we see emerging.” Demand for compostable plastics is growing.
For these applications, made from either bio-based plastics or fossil-based plastics, formulators must meet specific standards and should choose pigments that have low or no heavy metals so that

the plastic compounds and end products can be below the limits set by regulations. Nickel-, chrome- or copper-based pigments can be limited by these restrictions. Stefano Bartolucci, Global Market Segment Man- ager for Plastics at Lanxess’ Inorganic Pigments business unit, said: “Colortherm-brand iron oxide pigments from Lanxess are proven to be almost completely free from heavy metals, [so] the limits for biodegradable plastics can be reliably main- tained, even with a high pigment content.” Another trend, he said, is increasing demand for
