Stabilising additives, including antioxidants and ultraviolet (UV) light stabilisers, are key to increas- ing the durability of plastics products, which directly impacts sustainability. Antioxidants protect the polymer from oxidation during processing, use, or reprocessing during recycling. Light stabilisers protect the polymer from degradation catalysed by light in indoor or outdoor use. The formulation is highly dependent on the end-use application and the conditions in which the plastic is expected to survive. BASF’s latest heat and light stabiliser is Tinuvin NOR 211 AR for plastic film used in agricultural applications (plasticulture), including intensive horticulture under severe UV radiation and the presence of high levels of inorganic agricultural

chemicals that contain sulphur and chlorine, for example. These chemicals are increasingly being used due to adoption of practices including integrated pest management and organic farming, says BASF. At the same time, there has been a trend to thinner and more durable multilayer films, which are seen as more sustainable because they reduce plastic waste and facilitate recycling. These films, which are often polyethylene (PE), must be stabilised to withstand these severe conditions. “The Tinuvin NOR 211 AR additive solution
