containing no UV stabilisers or impact modifiers, which were found to be very brittle after UV exposure. The test specimens incorporating the UV stabiliser and impact modifier were subjected to the same level of UVB radiation, but total elonga- tion to failure was still below that of the standard grade of PK but still more than 15 times that of the UV exposed silver ion antimicrobial compound. Charpy notched impact testing was also carried
out. The notched test specimens containing the impact modifier and UV stabiliser exhibited significantly higher impact strengths than the unstabilised antimicrobial polyketone compound. The company noted there was still a drop when compared to the standard grade, showing that the UVB radiation was having an effect even on this stabilised material.
Increased durability Songwon’s SongNox 9228 is a secondary diphos- phite-based antioxidant that improves hydrolytic stability for polyolefins, especially at high process- ing temperatures. The antioxidant also provides colour protection in chromium-catalysed HDPE as well as in PP and engineering resins. A modified version of the new additive, SongNox 9228T, contains a small fraction of tri-isopropanol amine and is a solid product designed for masterbatches. The company’s triazine UV absorber additive, SongSorb 1164, can be used either for improving outdoor weathering in polyolefins and engineering plastics or for improving UV stability of polyolefins used in food-contact packaging applications. Songwon says it has developed a carbon
reduction roadmap that aims to achieve net-zero neutrality with regard to Scope 1 (direct) and Scope 2 (indirect) emissions by 2050. The company says that it has increased the availability of life cycle assessments (LCAs) for its core products. At NPE 2024, Clariant highlighted two light
stabilisation additives for agricultural films in the Americas. The Addworks AGC additives can be used by masterbatch producers or directly by film converters. Addworks AGC 102G was especially designed
for greenhouse films applications and delivers superior UV protection under a harsh chemical environment, which is particularly important for the intensive agricultural industry where high sulfur, chlorine and iron concentrations are used. “We are seeing increasing use of chemicals and increasing UV exposure levels,” said Eliandro Felipe, Head of Sales Americas for Additives Polymer Solutions. “Films need to last three to five years in the field, and the additive is used to prevent premature

degradation. Meanwhile, the additive also reduces haze, maintaining film transparency and boosting efficiency of crop growth.” In the same range, Addworks AGC 970G was developed for mulch film applications, protecting the film from UV exposure and chemicals, while it supports film converters to enhance productivity through efficient dosage. Clariant also brought AddWorks PKG 158 to the
North American region, in response to the increased use of recycled materials by compounders and polymer producers. The highly efficient antioxidant solution provides colour protection and reduces thermal oxidative degradation of the polymer during multiple conversion processes. It enhances process stabilisation at elevated temperatures and provides low discoloration and low plate-out. “As our customers increase their use of recycled
content, we have optimised AddWorks PKG 158 for processability and to enhance the resin for end-of- life plastic recycling,” said Felipe.
Designing a compound for stability under harsh and variable outdoor conditions requires careful formulation and extensive testing to meet the needs of specific applications. Techmer PM has custom UV stabiliser packages for agricultural film that are designed to allow films to last in the field for the growing season and retain tensile properties in extreme environments. The company has also designed UV products for compostable films, which are meant to be installed in the field and used for a year, with the additive tailored specifically for a region, growing season length, and film thickness. Depending on the application, UV packages are designed for various environmental exposures, including pesticide chemicals commonly used in the agricultural industry that standard UV packages cannot survive,
