Calum MacLean named as CEO for €3bn Advent/Lanxess ETP JV
Lanxess and private equity group Advent International have named Calum MacLean as CEO of the planned engineering plastics joint venture they are assembling from the Lanxess High Performance Materials business and the acquisition of DSM’s Engineering Materials division. MacLean will take on the
role on the closure of the deal, which is currently going through the regula- tory review processes and is expected for first half of next year. He has a long
Hallstar grows in plasticisers
Hallstar is to acquire the Lanxess ester polymer additives manufacturing facility at Greensboro, North Carolina US. It hopes to complete the move before the end of the year. The company said the
deal, which includes the production plant and selected product lines, will expand its existing manufacturing capacity and will enable it to grow its polymeric plasticiser business in the US. The Greenboro site
produces phthalate-free plasticizers including benzoate and citrate esters marketed under the Uniplex brand.

Neste has launched a strategic study to explore the possibility of transition- ing its refinery at Porvoo in Finland to a renewable and circular site. The aim is to end crude oil refining in the mid-2030s. Through co-processing
and retrofitting of units, Neste plans to significantly grow its renewable and
circular production at the site. The transformation under study would start with co-processing of both renewable and circular feedstock and could continue with retrofits of existing units at a later stage. It envisages a long-term capacity potential of 2-4m tonnes/yr. Transformation on such a
scale would create the need for significant investments over the coming decade, the company says, with decisions taken as planning proceeds and to reflect variations in the pace of change of both the renew- able and circular businesses as well as traditional refining.

Calum has accepted the designated CEO role in this strategic investment and are convinced that his highly relevant experience at both Ineos and Synthomer will be invaluable during the integration and subsequent growth of the engineering materials business,” said Ronald Ayles, Managing
Partner at Advent. The new joint venture company will have sales of around €3bn and will be a leading supplier to automo- tive, electronics, electrical and consumer goods segments. Advent will hold a minimum 60% stake in the business.

n Separately, DSM opened its upgraded compounding plant at Evansville in Indiana, US, last month. The 3,700m2 plant now runs on 100% purchased renewable energy
and equipment has been updated to reduce energy consumption — variable speed drives are used on all compounding lines, it says. The company declined to disclose the capacity of the plant but said the invest- ment and expansion, including compounding, will help to meet long-term increased regional demand for materials, such as its Akulon PA6/PA66, Arnite PET/PBT, Arnitel TPC, EcoPaXX PA410, ForTii PA4T/PPA and Stanyl PA46.
