Technology from melt filtration specialists increasingly includes automation to help recyclers remove contaminants. Chris Saunders reports on the latest products
New filters cope with contamination
Melt filtration technology is evolving to meet the demands of plastics recycling, with the most recent advancements focused on automation, fine filtration, and other innovations. The general consensus is that the ongoing trend towards more precise and efficient filtration systems is necessary in order to improve the quality of end products. Traditional melt filters such as screen changers require manual cleaning or replacement of parts which often leads to unscheduled downtime, but recent innovations include the fine-tuning of automated backflushing systems which clean the filter screens without interrupting production helping maintain continuous processing. Other developments focus on honing existing technology and then integrating sensors, data analytics, and machine learning to optimise processes. By monitoring pressure and flow rate across the filter, systems can adjust parameters such as screen change timing, backflush cycles, and processing speeds.

Nordson’s Polymer Processing Systems (PPS) division introduced its BKG HiCon K-SWE-HD/RS melt filter to the US market, which has been designed to manage backflushing in a mainte- nance-friendly way. The safety cover can be opened vertically allowing the operator to reach the filter piston from all sides, and to cope with high process pressures it is equipped with a patented melt-pressure controlled venting start that automates the filling of the screen cavity after a screen change in such a way that no air entrap- ments hamper the process, thus providing maxi- mum pressure consistency. Nordson PPS has announced an expansion of its sales agent network in Europe to boost global support for its BKG melt delivery and pelletising customers, with melt filtration specialist Fimic appointed the exclusive agent for Nordson’s BKG products in Italy. The collaboration combines Nordson BKG’s portfolio of high-performance melt
