end products without compromising performance. The aragonite is a precipitated calcium carbonate that accumulates in the shallow waters of the Bahamas from blooms of phyto- plankton. The bio-based mineral is harvested and milled into OceanCal oolitic aragonite powder, which is available untreated and with a vegetable-based stearic acid coating in standard particle size distributions of 3µm, 5µm, and 8µm D50. The company says it is actively developing ultrafine and coarser grades to broaden the product range. In addition, the company has


expanded and opened a new facility in Savannah, GA, US, complementing its existing site in Gadsden, AL. The new facility is located on the coast with direct rail access and will help the company serve domestic and interna- tional markets efficiently, the company said. The Savannah facility is supply- ing dried and screened aragonite to various industries, and the company is currently commissioning the milling equipment to be able to supply powder from this site. To quantify carbon footprint


reduction, the company has estab- lished an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its products. “The EPD confirms that our oolitic aragonite is climate positive, meaning it removes more carbon from the atmosphere than is emitted during harvesting and processing,” the company explained.


Calcium carbonate Incoa said that its InCal calcium carbonate mineral modifiers are optimised for thermoplastics and are produced using waterless grinding for low emissions. The company’s EPD shows a carbon dioxide footprint of 210 kg CO2


/metric tonne of InCal,


which the company said is 25-30% lower than industry average. The table shows an example of a PP compound filled with InCal for use in a thermofor- med food tray. The filler reduces the material carbon footprint and also reduces the amount of heating needed for the process.

The company said that its InCal 10BF BioFill is a specially modified calcium carbonate that resists hydroly- sis during extrusion, which can be a problem in polyesters and ester- based biopolymers. Incoa’s InCal 10BF and 15BF surface-treated grades are engi- neered for good dispersion in microporous PE/PP breathable films and BOPP packaging. Benefits include thermal and UV stability, high hydro- phobicity, high water vapour transmis- sion and water pressure resistance, in addition to lower carbon footprint for the finished goods. Omya’s next-generation Omyamax calcium carbonate masterbatch offers optimised output and dispersion qual- ity for compounders and final convert- ers in applications such as PP raffia, HDPE film for thin bags, thermofor- med sheet and other flexible and rigid packaging, the company said. In masterbatch production, output rates of a twin-screw extruder can be increased up to 35%. In addition, the filler, which was launched in 2022, demonstrates less PP degradation compared to conventional calcium carbonate, which allows higher use levels without impacting UV stability (eg in PP raffia). A recent case study by ExxonMobil described the use of the company’s Vistamaxx perfor- mance polymers with Omya’s calcium carbonate masterbatch in the core layer of high-performance raffia tape. Results showed better tenacity and elongation with the new masterbatch.
