ADDITIVES | PVC FORMULATIONS
Manager at PVC and polyolefin compounder Benvic to give a comprehensive account of the threats and opportunities currently facing the European PVC cable industry. “On the plus side, the European PVC industry is overcoming obstacles and hedging its growth issues by switching compounding produc- tion to Central and Eastern Europe,” he said. “Lower costs prevail there, and legislative constraints have yet to fully catch up with the pace being set by the EU and CPR regulations. Benvic’s Poland subsidiary operates in Europe’s biggest PVC cabling market (13%) and has seen a significant upturn for its PVC compounding expertise and production over the past two years.” However, Grange warned that regulatory challenges include new objectives in the EU Construction Product Regulations coming into play before the end of the year, along with eco design rules, which will affect electrical products from 2026, and new guidelines around end-of-life vehicles to be put in place in 2030. Regulatory pressure also continues in PVC plasticisers and the EU is also expected to pursue the removal of certain legacy additives from the PVC cable compound mix.
Lubricants Clariant produces a wide range of internal and external lubricants for the PVC industry. Rice bran wax is a natural and sustainable alternative to other waxes, including montan and synthetic waxes, helping customers meet their supply and sustain- ability needs while maintaining the desired product characteristics. Clariant says its bio-based range of additives, Licocare RBW Vita, delivers on both performance and sustainability. Based on renew- able rice bran wax, a non-food-competing by-prod- uct of rice bran oil production, Licocare RBW Vita additives function as effective lubricants in engi- neering thermoplastics including rigid PVC. Rice bran waxes increase the flow of polyesters to allow faster production rates of clear and translucent PET for both food and security packaging and are excellent organic pigment dispersants. With over 98% renewable carbon index, these waxes dramati- cally reduce a product’s carbon footprint. “Our innovative additives portfolio includes specialised solutions for both polyolefins and non-polyolefins, enabling improved processing, better mechanical properties, and enhanced surface qualities in recycled materials,” said
