event preview | Compounding World Asia 2017

Speakers at the Compounding World Asia conference include (from top left to bottom right): Ardy Doelen, Sales & Business Development Manager at Polyscope Polymers; Dr Daniele Bonacchi, Application Development Scientist at Imerys Graphite & Carbon; Dr Johannes Krückel, Process Engineer at Leistritz Extrusionstechnik; Montree Pleekhunt, Compounding Specialist at PTT Global Chemical; Carl Philip Poepel, Head of Product Mangement for Twin Screw Extrusion at KraussMaffei Berstorff; Adam Dreiblatt, Director of Process Technology at CPM Century Extrusion; and Frank Lechner, Head of Process Technology at Coperion

Technical Sales Manager at JM Huber Investment (China). He will describe how the synergistic effect between magnesium hydroxide and melamine poly (metal phosphates) can be exploited in the development of halogen-free fire retardant engineering plastic com- pounds. Ardy Doelen, Sales & Business Development Manager at Polyscope Polymers in the Netherlands, will follow with a presentation examining new options for optimising the performance of engineering plastic blends. Dr Saifudin Abubakar, Senior Technology Advisor at

ExxonMobil Chemical Services (Shanghai), will discuss some of the latest high performance polymers devel- oped to improve dispersion during compounding. And Dr Michael Tinkl, Director Technical Services for Technical Polymers & Polymer Packaging at Omya International in Switzerland, will detail the use of the latest mineral modifiers in the creation of compounds for breathable films and fibres. The final session of the first day will investigate

surface property modification. Dr Ing Claudio Cattivelli, Global Sales & Development Director at Italian company Heroflon, will look at different options for optimising frictional characteristics and resistance to abrasion of compounds. Dr Richard Marshall, CEWO of Tenasitech in the US, will detail the application of a novel additive for reducing surface scratching. And Dr HyunSeong Kim, Technical Service Group Manager at US-based Shamrock Technologies, will discuss the use of recycled PTFE micro-powders as an option to improve the wear resistance and lubricity of engineering plastic compounds. The second day of the Compounding World Asia

conference focuses on technologies for modifying thermal and electrical conductivity of plastic com-

pounds. The first two of these presentations examines options for modifying thermal conductivity to enable development of polymer-based thermal management products. Klaus Rathberger, Managing Director at Georg Luh in Germany, will get the day underway with an overview of the wide variety of carbon-based additives available to enhance the thermal conductivity of plastic compounds. He will be followed by Stefanie Wildhack, Specialist Product & Application Develop- ment at 3M Technical Ceramics in Germany, who will detail how boron nitride fillers can be used to adjust the thermal properties of plastics. The conductivity management session will be

brought to a close by Dr Daniele Bonacchi, Application Development Scientist at Imerys Graphite & Carbon in Switzerland, who turns the focus to electrical perfor- mance. His presentation will review the use of carbon additives to modify the electrical conductivity and static management properties of plastics for applications such as electronics packaging. Obtaining a plastic compound that meets perfor-

mance requirements at an acceptable price is not just about additive technologies; processing know-how is just as important and, with some of the more difficult to disperse additives, may be critical. So the final two sessions of the conference focus on techniques for optimising compound production in a variety of scenarios. Dr Johannes Krückel, Process Engineer at Leistritz Extrusionstechnik in Germany, opens the processing session with an analysis of how to optimise processing conditions for incorporation of hydromagne- site huntite on twin screw compounding equipment. Krückel will be followed by Montree Pleekhunt, Compounding Specialist at PTT Global Chemical (Public)
