Netherlands-based Black Bear said its carbon black, which is sourced from waste tyres, has received an official Cradle-to- Cradle Certified Bronze Certifi- cate, as assessed by the Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency (EPEA). It is the first carbon black to gain the certification. The Cradle-to-Cradle
Certified Products Programme is a third-party verified programme that certifies prod- ucts and materials that are developed to respect human and environmental health, designed for future use cycles, and that use clean energy and water throughout the supply chain. improvement every two years. Michael Braungart, founder and CEO of the EPEA, de- scribed the Black Bear material as “a game-changer in the field of carbon black”. He added: “It is ‘upcycled’ because the output material is of higher quality than the input material - furnace black in car tyres.” Black Bear’s carbon black was particularly noted for its extremely low levels of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which means it can be recommended for applications with potential skin contact such as bicycle handlebars, stroller handles, wheelchairs and car and bicycle tyres. ❙
