Arkema invests in bio-based PA
Arkema said it will invest some €300m over the next five years to expand its biosourced PA 11 chain by building a world-scale production plant in Asia for its Rilsan brand of PA, which is derived from castor oil. The company said the
proposed new facility will produce both the amino 11 monomer and PA 11 polymer and will increase the company’s capacity by around 50% when it comes onstream in 2021. Arkema forecasts strong
growth potential for its Rilsan PA11 material, notably in
automotive, 3D printing, sports goods and electronics. It claims it is the only 100% bio-sourced performance PA to qualify for many of the exacting metal replacement applications in these markets. The investment will also
result in a 50% increase in Arkema’s capacities for Pebax, in particular its Pebax RNew biosourced PA elastomer. Amino 11, which Arkema also makes at Marseille in France, is a key component for Pebax RNew. ❙
