Automotive moves As far as applications are concerned, the focus for developers of high performance PP compounds is frequently automotive. Clariant introduced what it describes as a new heat and light shield to address increasingly stringent OEM requirements in automotive interiors earlier this year. “AddWorks ATR 146 is now setting a new benchmark, aiming to create longer- lasting aesthetics and a healthier environment inside future vehicles due to reduced Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC),” the company says. Expected to be commercially available around the end of this year, AddWorks ATR 146 is a low dosage, sulphur-free stabiliser for filled elastomer modified PP (TPO) compounds. says. “Moreover, it displays excellent light stability performance that protects long term against discolora- tion. The outstanding UV and heat protection, plus high resistance to extraction media like water or detergents, enable typical TPO-based parts such as dashboards, instrument panels, door panels, and pillars to maintain their aesthetics for longer than with traditional stabilisers.” The company also cites high compatibility of
AddWorks ATR 146 with the PP polymer and high intrinsic stability, both of which contribute to reduce blooming and VOC emissions. Several PP polymer suppliers are aiming their latest
high performance grades at automotive. Total, says that its recently launched Lumicene MH140CN0 is the first of a new generation of metallocene PP homopolymers that combine low volatile content and high processabil- ity. “Total Lumicene MH140CN0 unlocks unprecedented solutions in the market segments and applications for which VOCs are becoming increasingly critical,” the company says. “This new product fills the void that was created by more stringent regulations and norms.” Lumicene MH140CN0 is said to be suitable for all
applications where purity and processing are key, such as thin-wall injection moulding, long glass fibre reinforced compounds, fibre production and interior applications. It has an MFI of 140g/10 min and a volatiles content some 30 times lower than a comparable ex- re- actor Ziegler-Natta product, Total claims. “By using this product, compounders can not only avoid energy intensive and time consuming devolatilisation steps with standard PP grades; they can also set new standards in purity levels by pushing the limits further.”
