as their responsibilities often intersect. “I think it is a testament to who she is,” he said of Vobis winning the Transportation Director of the Year award. “I think a lot of people may not have the luxury of knowing the per- son that we know and interacting with her every day, but they see the fruits of her labor. I think that is a testament to who she is and who our leadership is.” He noted that Vobis sees areas of expertise in each

employee and encourages them to pursue certain other areas in order to excel. He added that Vobis also pro- vides her employees with the power to create their own boundaries, which he noted could be scary but also empowering. “To have that flexibility and that trust to try things, I think is huge,” he said. Vobis prioritizes teamwork, and one night in particu- lar stands out to Rideout as an example. Last year, when the district staff members were performing multiple jobs because of vacancies, Rideout recalled still being at the office at 10 p.m. working through athletic trips. When Vobis saw that she and other members of her team were

still working, she chose to stay and help, even though her work was done. Rideout added that about 20 minutes lat- er, a delivery of cookies arrived. “Something sweet to keep you guys going,” she remembered Vobis telling the staff. “I can only speak for myself, but I know what she went

through to make the community aware of how hard our existing staff was working to meet these goals and she was always still trying to find improvements,” Rideout said. “It wasn’t just about trying to fill the seat, it was how can we fill the seat and then give more and then we did incentives and bonuses. She made sure that for the folks that were here, even though we were trying to get people in, that we hadn’t forgotten about them. And I think that that says a lot about her ability as a leader and how she’s able to multitask.” Rideout continued, “She didn’t just give us the work to

do, she got in there and she did the work with us. And I think that really says a lot about who she is because she’s not just speaking about the problem, she was in there try- ing to fix the problem. And I truly respect her for that.” ●
