FULL SERVICE

With radiators, DPFs, EGRs and more than 30,000 exhaust parts, it’s no wonder Auto-jet is the choice of school bus systems coast to coast.

the manufacturers my feedback. They were willing to listen when I told them what wasn’t working.” Case in point: She and another instructor took an ESB out to hilly

areas to see how they could be controlled from rolling back. They reached a point where the bus could not progress uphill. “The motor in that torque was tuned in such a way that it was get- ting the maximum number of miles that they could get out of the vehicle,” Jensen said. “But there wasn’t enough power to the power- train to move it forward on a very steep incline.” The manufacturer reprogrammed the torque to work for that hill,

Jensen added, and the range then went down on the vehicles. There also are different types of batteries, she noted. “The salt batteries have to be plugged in all the time, because they

have to maintain that temperature to run them,” she said. “They are safer as far as fire is concerned. But there is the trade-off that they need power all the time.” Jensen said she wants to see ESBs succeed. When working for Twin Rivers Unified, one reason why the district was a frontrunner at adopting ESBs to replace aging vehicles was to = provide welcomed air-conditioning during the region’s hottest season, and that she wouldn’t have to breathe “toxic fumes” anymore. “I see the health benefits it can provide the drivers, the kids and

the communities,” she concluded, adding that as EV mandates are coming down the pike, school buses are often left behind. “You have to get people on the ground with these drivers and teach them what they need to know and don’t leave them in the dark.” ●
