School Bus Program. How has your understanding about electric buses and operating them changed since you first took over as president to today? And what do you think is necessary in the years to come for these school buses to truly make sense for all school districts?
McManamon: Electric school buses offer a lot of op-
portunity for our industry, and while the Clean School Bus Program offers record funding levels, continued funding will be critical to the success of shifting fleets to fully electric. Over the last few years, I have seen the electric school bus go from a novelty to a permanent fixture in student transportation. Technology improve- ments have increased mileage and enhanced the safety of the buses. This has allowed them to compete in the home to school/school to home market. As the electric school bus popularity increases, we must ensure the infrastructure is there to meet the demand. As with any mode of transportation, fleet managers must recognize the benefits and limitations of the bus and use it to its full potential.
STN: Patrick, as you transition to past president, what stands out most about the past two years?
McManamon: Over the last two years, we as an indus-
try have been faced with a litany of challenges. Between COVID, driver shortages, limited resources and in- creased demands, the industry has continued to provide student transportation. While the future will see changes within the industry one thing will never change, student safety will remain our number one priority in student transportation. As we transition from my presidency to Mike Simmons, I am confident NASDPTS will remain a leader and valuable partner in school transportation.
STN: Mike, this is your second go-round as NASDPTS
president. How is the school transportation industry landscape changed since you were last president 10 years ago when you last served?
Mike Simmons: There are a variety of issues in the forefront of school transportation that weren’t on the radar
