explained that routing is a key piece for student success, especially when operating during a driver shortage. Yacub, who started his career as a CCSD school bus driver 18 years ago, said he sees the whole picture of transporta- tion operations. “It definitely is beneficial,” he said of his driving back-

ground. “To have an idea of what the drivers are expecting to see when they get something as simple as a route cov- ersheet—the information that’s pertinent to their job. … even to the point of having directions laid out in a certain way. Their purpose is to drive, not read a newspaper.” He added that he helps steer conversations away from

the way things used to be done to how they will be. “The goal still has to fit to the end result because if the driver can’t interpret it or gets confused by it, what impact is it having on the service and are we creating issues?” he added.

Defining Leadership Vobis describes her leadership style as being collabora-

tive. “I’m always interested in the perspective of others,” she said, adding that she was able to choose six of her eight

administrators. “I think that with the different experiences that my administrative team has and the different back- grounds that they come from, it provides a well-rounded team, so I’m always open to their ideas and input.”

On the cover of this month’s issue, look for the air conditioning vents that line both sides of the bus between the windows and the roof. Paul Shelley, Clark County’s director of fleet services, explained the decision on vent placement was due to space constraints. All vehicles have air conditioning pro- vided by TransArctic. Shelley added the district opted for this configuration rather than plastic vents due to student safety and less maintenance. During the summer, the average daily tempera- ture is well above 95 degrees. School bus drivers also have their own dedicated air conditioning on the vehicles. The driver is able to control the exact temperature on their dash, Scott Castleberry the fleet maintenance manager for CCSD, added.
