School Transportation News Published by STN Media Group

In episode 124 of the School Transportation Nation podcast, “Thrown a Wrench: Insights from School Bus Manufacturers and Mechanics,” Mike Warner, associate director of fleet maintenance at Cobb County School District in Georgia, discussed the changes he has seen while working in the industry and the importance of staying connected with maintenance staff. Listen at stnpodcast.com.

I rarely get behind the scenes with the garage of our daily operation. Of course, I check in with [lead mechanic] Ron Yoder every morning to see what is happening on what bus for the day and any contracted work that we may be doing for another district. I appreciate his 22 years of service and dedication to TRCS beyond measure … Time for me to step up and become even more involved with fleet management. I am looking forward to doing so with support partners such as Lion Electric and West Michigan International. The [August] STN issue recognizing fleet staff managers made me take a step back and wonder why I did not nominate Ron. These guys are the ‘boots on ground’ that keeps us moving forward [but] are becoming more difficult to find, as Mr. Warner stated. Sure, I can open the hood, fill fluid, change a bulb or lens. It’s time I put in some muscle and spread the word that we would not be able to do what we do without what they do. Thank you, fleet leaders, everywhere! Kenni Jean Schrader, Transportation Supervisor Three Rivers Community Schools in Michigan

Each October, STN selects 10 Rising SuperStars from nominations of transportation professionals who are seen as pushing their organization to new heights with innovative solutions and leadership. Gilbert Rosas led this year’s list of nominees with his achievements involving electric school buses. Read more about this year’s Rising SuperStars at stnonline.com/go/oct22.

I met with Gilbert last week. Great guy doing great work on school bus[es]. Twitter/@Renew_Concord

Congratulations @CumberlandCoSch’s Executive Director of Transportation Kristi Harden for being selected by @STNMagazine as one of its Rising SuperStars!” Twitter/@ncpublicschools

A recent blog delved into gun violence on school buses and how educators agree that it is frighteningly easy for a student to smuggle a gun onto a bus. Read the full blog at stnonline.com/go/du.

These truly are concerning times for all school staff. Facebook/Estelle Graves

For the Record: In the October issue, the Rising SuperStars article, “Breaking His Own Record,” incorrectly stated the partner companies involved with the Stockton Unified School District electric bus project in California, and the number of school buses Modesto City Schools has in its fleet.
