One of Smith’s current goals, which demonstrates his

forward-thinking, focuses on the purchase of green ener- gy and low emission vehicles. Cy-Fair recently completed the purchase of 336 propane vehicles from IC Bus, with the help of a community bond. Buses were being deliv- ered en masse while I was on-site and discussions on where to park the new vehicles across all five transporta- tion facilities was a frequent topic discussed during my two and half day visit. “This is the first school year we’re running the new

propane buses, but I can almost assure you that the expectation is that we’re going to save money,” Smith said, adding that the oldest route bus in his fleet is a currently a 2016 model year. “We do all of our own work in house, so we have a strong preventive maintenance program. Our operating cost is very low, and that’s because we embrace the technology, we embrace the new fleet, we embrace a 12-year replacement cycle. And we have a great team of technicians that do a great job with preventive maintenance. We can do over-the-air diagnostics on buses, so that helps us avoid significant

malfunctions of vehicles, so we can catch that and be proactive on the forefront.” In addition to propane, Smith prioritizes a mixed fleet, as to not be dependent on one fuel or energy type. He’s also considering the benefits and feasibility of electric vehicles. Hill noted that in her 42 years in transporta- tion, she did not expect to see an electric vehicle on the road at her district. But now the possibility is very real, especially as Smith prioritizes clean air for future gener- ations. Cy-Fair is also continuing to receive delivery of
