But they accent their purchasing decision not just with economics but also safety. “Our decision is based on a preventive [main- tenance] schedule on the life of the bus and its components,” he noted. “If the life expectancy of a bus, as an example, is 10 years, then we know we need to start budgeting for a new purchase around the eighth year. Another factor that might drive this decision is if we have a bus that has recurring mechanical problems. We may sideline a bus such as this and plan to purchase a new one in its place. All of this is determined by the budget dollars that our district has each year but planning for new purchases is key.” He added that buses that are fuel-efficient

Safety Focus and Adapting to Change “Getting our students to and from school
safely is our top concern,” Coleman explained. “Buses that stay on the road and create very few mechanical issues for us play a large factor in the return on our investment. Safety for our students, our drivers and the city of Beaumont are the main concerns for us.
