holistic product that can be used for numerous appli- cations,” said Davis. “Often times, each department is concentrating on solutions that can make a significant difference in their services, operations and overall per- formance that impacts all stakeholders within their circle of influence.”
Create a Reasonable Methodology Davis emphasized that a sound methodology used
collectively by others in the decision process is key as the school bus itself affects many different areas of school operations and the student experience. “Developing a methodology that brings numerous
departments together within a school district and each of the departments explains how certain technologies may enhance their overall operations,” he added. “Other departments within the school district may have similar needs to improve operations, and discussing them to- gether may identify technology exists or can be modified to assist numerous departments. One example would be student ID card systems. A system would allow the district
to verify student ridership on school buses, charge or ac- count for meals served in school nutrition, gain access to media centers and track items that could be checked out through the media centers, gain access to the classroom wings, and possibly verify student attendance daily and possibly in the event of an emergency.” Each district will have some different approaches to asset procurement as times and technology changes. Methodology, however, is key and must be based on different ways of assigning value. Frequent purchasing of buses benefits a school district by forcing them to consider new technology as well as changing concerns for students and fleet operations. “It is never good to have a year or two where no new
purchases are made,” said Mike McClure, the director of transportation for Fayetteville Public Schools in Fayette- ville, Arkansas. “This causes shortage and maintenance issues down the road.” ●
