access for all of its students, especially those who live in low-income areas. Jackson’s team is in the early process of talking with the information technology department to determine the feasibility of installing Wi-Fi on school buses, monitoring web traffic and providing neighbor- hood hotspots. “Some parents may struggle to [collect] the funds to

buy internet and Wi-Fi,” Jackson said. “Maybe we can park a bus at one of those neighbors over a weekend or at night so that students get Wi-Fi and still work on their schoolwork.”

Jeffco’s North Terminal was built in the 1970s. It is

where Jackson started at Jeffco and where he continues to feel especially home. But the corridors are tight, and the office space is cramped and loud. Three employees who were sitting at their desks com-

mented that because of the daily nose from continuous telephone ringing, radio chatter and side conversations, they don’t even turn their car radios on when they head home at night. Soon the space will receive a massive overhaul. Already,

a newly purchased warehouse is a short walk from the North Terminal, thanks to bond money that was approved this past spring. The new facility stretches for miles, it seems, and is expected to be completed by August 2020. It will not only provide each staff member with their

own office, but it will also have enough room to house Jackson and his administrative team. The new North Terminal, Jackson said, is the length of two football fields, and will be able to hold all of the growth that the North area is experiencing. “Thirty years later, growth has boomed [in the north

area] and we have outgrown our location,” Jackson con- cluded. “So, this has been a huge upside for us. And huge for our folks in the north area, having a new facility being built. … Expanding and modernizing for them is huge.” ●

Colorado passed its “Improving Educational Stability for Foster Youth” bill in April, and the number of one-way trips that Jeffco contracts

out to alternative transportation provider ALC Schools increased over 50 percent to 1,419. Read more about the impact of the new law at stnonline.com/go/62.
