Jeffco’s Expansive Plate
what makes Jackson and Jeffco so special. She said that Jackson always has an open-door policy and allows his staff to approach him at any time with questions and concerns. “Jeffco is the largest school district
in Colorado, but we get really small really fast,” Archuleta noted. Jackson clarified that Denver Pub-
lic Schools with its pre-kindergarten program is technically Colorado’s largest school district. But Jeffco has the most kindergarten through 12th grade students.
Jackson works tirelessly on ways
to improve the age of his fleet, up- grade technology on the school buses, improve security, monitor growth, and support his staff while the national driver shortage continues.
Jeffco has four bus terminals, but the winding mountain road Jackson drove to the West terminal is the most breathtaking. At an 8,000-foot eleva- tion, Terminal Director Josie Gallagher greeted Jackson in her “driving outfit” as she called it. The national driver shortage is felt
throughout Jeffco, but Gallagher’s operation has had the hardest time employing drivers because of the mountainous roads, wintry conditions and remote terminal location. Jackson said the biggest challenge in addressing the shortage is that Jeffco wages are less than those at other metro Denver districts. While his district does offer benefits to its employees, Jackson said he believes the first step is being competitive in pay. Jeffco is also working on a bonus
The Denver-area school district is implementing a lap/shoulder seatbelt pilot program this year on routes operated by five new school buses. Next month, Greg Jackson said he plans to collect feedback from the bus drivers. Jeffco also implemented a Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports program on its school buses, which is focused on extending the classroom to the school bus. The district also has its own body shop, where time and taxpayer dollars are saved by repairing buses and other vehicles in-house.
