FEEDBACK

School Transportation News Published by STN Media Group

Question of the Month This month’s survey asked readers about significant benefits that school districts and bus companies offer bus drivers.

Sick leave incentive—if you do not miss any work in a quarter you receive $100. No missed days adds an additional $50 at the end of the year. Also, [a bonus for] longevity after 15 years. —Kevin Roberts, Transportation Supervisor Garaway Local School District in Sugarcreek, Ohio

Fully paid dental, vision and life insurance. Additionally, the spouse and children can be covered, and the district will pay 75 percent of the policy premium. —Tom Carroll, Director of Transportation San Juan Unified School District in North Highlands, California

Editor’s Note: An online article on LED lighting reported that updating school bus visibility can help reduce the rate of drivers illegally passing school buses. Visit stnonline.com/go/5z to read the full article.

Updating lighting is a great idea. I doubt it helps the illegal pass- ing problem, though. Not sure “lack of visibility is the issue.” —Facebook/John Haynie

Stop letting [students] cross alone! Get out and escort, or do right-side pick up only and drop off. California has a plethora of ridiculous laws, but they require you to escort. Don’t blind the kids with a light so they can’t see the cars coming. Get out of the bus and protect the kids. —Facebook/Chet White

Editor’s Note: An article in the September issue of STN focused on using Wi-Fi in school buses. Visit stnonline.com/go/Sept19 to read the full technology issue.

The school bus is poised to become a mobile classroom due to ever more robust Wi-Fi connections. —Sean Kilcarr, Senior Editor American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, Twitter/@AASHTOsean

For the Record

The article “It’s Clicking” on page 33 of the October 2019 issue, incorrectly stated that 15 percent of readers have 2-point lap/shoulder seatbelts. The graphic should have stated that 15 percent of readers have 2-point lap belts on some or all of their buses. ... A photo caption for the article “One-Two Punch” on page 47 of the “Rising Stars” profiles in the October 2019 issue, incorrectly identified J.P. Burd, the director of transportation at Humble ISD in Texas. ... A “Rising Stars” profile on page 51 incorrectly stated in a graphic that Bob Kenna is employed at First Student, when he actually works at National Express. STN regrets these errors.
