team dynamics and two years of individual leadership growth. A new focus is to better develop and expand the leadership skills of transportation supervisors. Jackson also champions a monthly recognition
program throughout Jeffco. He awards a plaque to employees who have stood out. Jackson said people like to be told thank you, and he is thankful for every person who comes to work.
Jackson makes a point throughout his day to talk
with his employees. Whether they are a bus driver, a transportation supervisor or an area director, he makes the time to chat with them and ask how they are doing. He pointed out that many of those employees also have family members working at Jeffco. Family was a continuous theme at Jeffco. Jackson talk- ed about his two families most of the time—his personal family at home and the family he sees every day at work. He said he prides himself on building relationships and connecting bridges between different departments. Jackson said that starting at Jeffco as an area director helped him get to know the staff in the different termi- nals. He was able to see what they needed and to build relationships. Jackson also feels strongly about having relationships with administrators, because everyone is “in the same boat.” “Yes, one is working in the school, and one is working in the business unit, but at the end of the day, we are all here

got the job done while at Ryder. He brought that same perspective to his school districts. For example, meet- ing with the various school principals allowed him to address individual campus needs. “Having those relationships help you go much further in terms of better understanding the climate of your dis- trict. And then they have a better understanding of your department and the challenges,” Jackson said. “Every [lo- cation] is so different, so learning about each area is very important. But one thing I have realized is, no matter what your differences are and what you feel your needs are, it all has the same focus at the end of the day.” Jackson finds different ways to involve the depart-
ments, such as bringing different employees with him to the national conferences. This past July, he brought his purchaser to STN EXPO Reno, and next year, he plans on bringing his manager of human resources. “It really helped open her eyes, expand her view and
also the partnership that we have with purchasing. That is outstanding [now], because we are talking the same language,” Jackson said. “Over time, it opened up a better understanding of our two departments, and that’s what we are hoping for right now with our HR partner.” Bernadette Archuleta, manager for employment ser- vices in Jeffco’s HR department, said the family feel is
