A new coat of paint, a new microwave. Next year, we’re getting new furniture.” Shields said the recruiting team has grown closer as a


result of its activities, which the district pays for. Twice a month, members can be found with a truck, trailer and tent set-up at the farmer’s market, community events, county fair, and this year, the Oregon State Fair. The district rolls out Barney and Buster—three-foot


tall, radio-controlled school buses that help train young- er children, and the public, about school bus safety. Shields’ staff even erects a spin-the-wheel game that awards children prizes. “At these events, we get from two to eight applicants, and about half of them will wind up driving for us,” said Shields. “Because they see what fun the team is having, more people want to get involved.” Cody Cox, former transportation supervisor for
