PC Control Blends the Worlds of Test Bench Tech and Industrial Automation

By Azad Jafari, I/O Product Manager, Beckhoff Automation W

hen it comes to creating test benches, Advantech Time is changing the

traditional landscape in meas- urement and test engineering. The Italian engineering experts are integrating two activities that were previously always separate: industrial control and data acquisition. Here, PC- based control from Beckhoff provides the necessary flexibili- ty to support a multidiscipli- nary ap proach in the test labo- ratory. Advantech Time, which

started as a spin-off of the University of Udine, supports companies in research and product development projects. The skilled engineering team examines specific issues, e.g., in thermodynamics, fluid dyna - mics, acoustics or process industry considerations. It combines scientific research methodologies with practical experience. “We take a 360-degree

approach to the requests we receive from companies in the areas of design, modeling, numer-

appropriate test setups and soft- ware for the measurement applications on an ad-hoc basis. Challenges often involve venti- lation issues, thermal manage- ment and heat transfer. The company also takes projects from other sectors — household appliances, automotive, envi- ronment, energy, and measure- ment and control technology, to name just a few. Advantech Time provides

more than mere Excel spread- sheets in data dumps; it answers concrete questions. The engi- neers strive to discover the caus- es of a product’s malfunctions and how to improve its perform- ance. In these applications, robust technologies from Beckhoff have proven crucial in effectively implementing often tricky tasks.
