56 Star letter Finding my way
Lyme Regis harbour is a place which helped me get to where I am now. Many years ago, I was trying to
find something to do in my free time and happened to be on the slipway at Lyme Regis, watching the harbour staff move some of the vessels around. I asked the harbour master at the time if he needed any volunteers, and to my surprise he asked if I could start the next day. I could, and I did. I started by helping to move
boats for winter storage, and over the next seven years I went from volunteer to an assistant harbour master. I received excellent

training and got involved with the local charity events and clubs, including Lyme Regis youth sailing. My time at Lyme Regis harbour
was so enjoyable; it was a job where I can honestly say that I didn’t feel like I was going to work. The experience and support I was given led to further career progression in the marine industry. I was a recipient of the RYA and Trinity House Yachtmaster scholarship, where I achieved my Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence and now work as a commercial skipper for a government agency. Lyme Regis
harbour and the people who work there welcome everyone with open arms. It was truly a privilege to be a part of a place which received visiting yachts and cruisers from all over the UK. I think it’s really a destination that all boaters should try to visit at some stage.

Adam wins an HX210E from Standard Horizon – a great piece of kit when you’re out on the water. Not only is it a handheld VHF radio, it also includes an FM radio, which means you can listen to your favourite stations too. ʼ˧Ϡ˦ ˔˧˘˥ˣ˥˙ Є˔˧˦ ˔˗ ˛˔˦ ˔ ˦˧˥˕˘ ˜˚˛˧ ˧˛˔˧ ˜ˠˠ˘˗˜˔˧˘ ˔˖˧˜˩˔˧˘˦ ˜˙ ˗˥ˣˣ˘˗ ˩˘˥˕˔˥˗ʡ

With developments in clothing, equipment and ˙˥˘˖˔˦˧˜˚ ˕˘˧˧˘˥ ˧˛˔ ˘˩˘˥ plus plenty of events taking place throughout the year, you can spend time on the water whenever you like!
@tamworthsailingclub keeps going throughout the year! Floods and ice sometimes stop play but I’ve seen some of our hardy sailors out in the snow! @greenberryisland
No winter lay-up here in Guernsey. We had race two of the Frostbite series recently. It was cold but sunny with a decent wind and chunky swell. @gsyphoto
Response to learning more about the activities you love: As a sea cadet in the early ’80s my favourite part was pulling and sailing down at ˧˛˘ ˖˔ ˦˔˜˜˚ ˖˨˕ʡ ˀ Ѓ˥˦˧ boat was a Topper, then my dad bought me a Solo.
