The British youth squad gain experience at the World Championships

Tactics and trophies S

ixteen talented young sailors headed to Armação dos

Buzios, Brazil in December to represent Great Britain in the 2023 Youth Sailing World Championships. A week of mixed conditions

tested the squad, but lead coach James Hadden was pleased with how they coped. ‘The team worked really hard to prepare, allowing them to test their abilities against the world’s best in a mini Olympic-style environment. ‘It was fantastic to see

them perform so well. They all had some amazing experiences which they can take forwards into their next events and beyond – a bright future awaits.’ The sailors competed in

nine disciplines across seven classes: iQFOIL windsurfer, 29er (Skiff), Nacra 15

(Multihull), 420 (two-person dinghy), 420 (two-person dinghy), ILCA 6 (one-person dinghy) and Formula Kite (Kiteboarding). The team Ѓ˜˦˛˘˗ ˜˧˛˜ ˧˛˘ ˧ˣ ˧˘ ˜ six disciplines and third overall in the Nations Trophy – a good result. iQFOIL windsurfer Darcey

Shaw secured bronze when competing against 21 female windsurfers and was pleased with her medal in Brazil. ‘The event was really

good – making it onto the podium for bronze was fantastic, and I also saw a turtle! Now I’m taking time off to catch up with schoolwork and spend time with family. I’ll also be on the water, practising for my next event.’ Some sailors said the

event had taught them how to better their tactical skills and techniques, using the experience to plan training for events this year.
