When trailing your boat abroad, check our advice to avoid complications


ost people towing their boat to the EU for a short trip pass through customs without issue.


But we’ve heard from a handful of members, particularly those going to regattas, who have encountered questions at the border. When you tow your boat from the UK to


the EU and plan to bring it back within 18 months, you are likely to be doing so under the terms of temporary admission, avoiding paying import tax and duty. Importantly, as you drive through the border control point, you’re making a customs ‘declaration by conduct’. You might not be stopped, but if you are, your ˖˩˘˥˦˔˧˜ ˜˧˛ ˖˨˦˧ˠ˦ ˙Ѓ˖˜˔˦ ˜ ˕˘


considered an oral customs declaration. Guidance from the European Commission obtained by the RYA indicates that if this happens you should present a completed supporting document; download this at qrco.de/annex71-01 or scan the QR code.
