Keep it clean E
nsuring that what you do to, or onboard, your boat won’t contaminate
the water means you’re helping to preserve it for the ˕˘˘Ѓ˧ ˙ ˣ˘ˣ˘ ˔˗ ˜˗˜˙˘ʡ Here’s how to make water- friendly changes.
Blackwater Try to make use of on-shore toilets. Consider installing a holding tank and using pump-out facilities. Find your nearest pump-out station at The Green Blue website’s Environmental Facilities Map.
Oil and fuel Using a fuel collar over nozzles will absorb ‘blow back’ when refuelling and catch drips when moving the nozzle across the deck. Also check the engine bilge for oil before pumping and use an absorbent sock to remove oil and fuel in the bilge. Install a ˕˜˚˘ Ѓ˧˘˥ ˧ ˖˔ˣ˧˨˥˘ ˔ ˜ or debris when pumping out.
Onboard cleaning It’s recommended to avoid
Tips to avoid polluting the water with your boat
cleaning products altogether and only use fresh water and a good scrubbing brush. This also helps to protect any sealants which can perish and lose colour from using certain detergents.
Paint When antifouling, consider more environmentally friendly paints, such as low volatile organic compound paints and non-biocidal coatings, such as silicone, vinyl or ultrasonic technologies. Compounds found in many antifoul paints can build up in marine organisms that are then ingested by marine wildlife.
Be prepared Keep a spill kit for accidental spills. The pads and booms included don’t absorb water, allowing more fuel to be collected. Avoid using detergents to clean up a spill which will spread it further. Find environmetally friendly products at
