Following the government’s announcement to extend bans  (such as bottom trawling) in protected areas, the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) requested feedback on its proposed plans from those who use the water. The plans aim to protect vulnerable habitats such as rocky reefs and seabed sediment in Marine Protected Areas.

Coastodians of Solway The Solway Coast and Marine Project is set to receive National Lottery funding to conserve and restore 210 miles of Scottish coast. The Solway coast, which runs from the western border with England up to Loch Ryan, has, for centuries, been important for the local economy. So, as well as supporting nature, the funding will also be used to help rural communities thrive.

Shore science

People across Northern Ireland can help their local coastal habitat while enjoying time by the sea. ShoreNI is a citizen science project, led by Ulster Wildlife, to help monitor marine life and track changes in the environment that will contribute to conservation work. Anyone can take part; sign up at www.ulsterwildlife.org/shore- ni#signup

The seagrass nursery at this European Marine Site is the only one of its kind in the north-east of England.

Canal conservation As part of the restoration of a stretch of the Montgomery Canal in Powys, a new wetland habitat is being created alongside it to help its rare aquatic plant life thrive. The aim of the overall project is to bring more of the canal back to  reach Welshpool to increase visitors in the area.

Offshore energy test A pioneering device has been installed in Falmouth Harbour to help marine technology innovation. The yellow demonstrator unit extends eight metres above the waterline and is testing technology that’ll support offshore industries, such as carbon capture. It has a licence to be in place until October.
