A Trip Down Memory Lane: Remembering David Williamson

By Kit Bartle David, or to all of us, Dave, born

on May 24th. Dave would have cele- brated his 70th birthday this year. Dave and Faye did celebrate their 49th Anniversary this year. To me he was DW. To me that was the nickname I gave him. My earliest memories of Dave

and Faye were spent in the little house with the little gas heater, on the prop- erty they currently live. We huddled on the chairs and couches sipping tea and coffee, just talking about life. Dave was a quiet guy, but with

such a great sense of humor. So many memories, of hay rides from the farm with their friends, Tom, Dave and Jim Everett, life long friend since they were boys, Al and Linda Garniss. Just a few I remember. Our trip to Iowa in a pick up

From Our Founder

Remembering May 1988

What we have been waiting

for has finally arrived:. Spring at last and the horse show season is underway. Christmas and winter are just around the next barrel.

May 1988 was a very busy

month in the Equine Business. Five outstanding teenaged eques- trians represented Canada at the 1988 Youth Quarter Horse World Championships in Fort Worth Texas. Representing Canada was Randy Vance, 17 of Fort McLoed, AB, Tara Rimmer, 18 of Victoria, BC, Christine Stevens of Winnipeg, MB, Nicki Amlin, 18 of West Lorne, ON, and Brad Pedersen, 17 of Regina, SK. The Coach for the Canada team was Jean Matheson Carnes.

truck with a small truck bed cover as we sat around a small table. Losing Kelly in the tack shop. He taught my son Todd how to do leather carving and made all the kids a belt with their name on the back. Dave had a great eye for horses

and picked out Lori’s first horse, Strong Tailwind, as well as a horse for Kim Bartlett. His accomplishments were

amazing. Dave won three saddles, a Granton horse trailer for one year. He won these on Maddy (Mystery Chance) when she was only 4. Dave had high point games horse at Quar- terama and was two points from a World Invitational Award. Dave won High Point games horse at OBRA with 2 horses. He taught numerous kids how to barrel race including his niece Sonia. He was also was a black- smith for many years. He loved his

You will have to wait for my next column to find out how our team did. If any of the team are still into horses write us an tell us how your equestrian life has pro- gressed.

The Guelph Equine Re-

search Centre official Ground Breaking Ceremonies were held on May 17, 1988. Her Royal Highness Princess Anne offici- ated at the sod turning cere- monies in June of 1986. Private donors contributed in excess of $2.5 million. Ontario’s horse in- dustry was pegged at $3.7 billion.

Humber College Grand

Opening was attended by E.P. Taylor, Canada’s famous indus- trialist. Equine Studies was a two year program that started in Sep- tember 1970. The Rider started in July 1970 we are still going but the Humber College Equine program ended in 1994.

clients and the clients loved him. Dave was a wonderful husband

to Faye. He loved his horses, his dogs and his parrots. Everyone loved him. I never heard him swear or talk about other people or horses. If Dave con- sidered you a friend you had a friend for life. Ross Misener was one such friend. Fay recalls each helping one another when it was needed. That was Dave, nothing was too much trouble if you needed a hand. Faye’s wish is for contributions

to go to the SPCA to help save all an- imal and it was Dave’s wish as well. DW, we all have great memories

of you over the years and your name will always come up and you will be remembered again when friends and family reminisce in the coming years. Until we all meet again Rest in peace……

the business of making belt buck- les. They advertised in our May 1988 edition. Belt buckles were priced from $26.00 to $3,000.

The WHAO were advertis-

ing their Western Classic. This time they were going with some Horse and Buggy events. The event was held at the Guthrie Buck Arena & Walter Hellyer Farms in Waterford, ON on June 11, 1988.

Bill Oja, a heavy duty coun-

try music buff, started writing his “Country Music Notes” column for The Rider. His first column was about Carol Johns and Friends the articles focused on Canadian Talent.. Later Bill used his savings to promote Colin But- ler, an up and coming 14 year old. Bill paid to bring out his first album. Colin was featured at Quarterama entertainment night.

The Canadian National Ex-

hibition were big promoters of Western Horses. Now all they

have is a Rodeo which is a great crowd pleaser but doesn’t help the general horse population. The CNE was canceled for the past 2 years due to COVID-19 but is back again this year.

The AQHA were very proud

as they announced that they were the worlds largest equine registry with 2.5 million horses and counting. In 2020 AQHA hit the 6 million milestone.

Peter Gravelle was the pres-

ident of the Arabian Horse Asso- ciation of Eastern Canada. He lived in Hamilton, ON so natu- rally he was providing us with lots of information for which we were glad to receive.

The WHAO held their Ex-

travaganza on June 24 and 25 at the Paris Fair Grounds. They were celebrating their 36 An- niversary. The WHAO was the beginning of the Ontario Horse industry.

are still destroying Ukraine minute by minute, day by day, inch by inch at a huge cost to their dignity and military equip- ment and the death of thousands to soldiers. Ukraine, the Worlds Food Basket, is in trouble. I watched in horror the May day parade from Red Square as the Communist hammer and sickle was proudly paraded by. What a shame that this clown Putin has done damage to the whole world. I hear some Americans

whining about $4.00 a Gallon for gas but I just paid $9.31 for a gal- lon.

We The North have our own problems mostly from the past. Just

remember, we in

Canada are facing daily up hill battles. In Ontario the four polit- ical parties are outlying each other. Andrea always has a better way of doing things but NEVER steps up to the plate to help. Oh boy, What a mess, no wonder the Cabal are active in Canada. Just remember we have all

kinds of problems of our own to deal with and when we have problems people tend to take out their frustrations on their family and pets. Please call the police to report your suspicions.
