UNDERFLOOR HEATING: PRODUCT FOCUS FIX UP, LOOK SHARP
The experts from green building products specialist Kerakoll talk us through its portfolio of products available for tiling over underfloor heating, advising on the most effective and easiest methods of fixing.
Laying tiles over underfloor heating need not be complicated if you use Kerakoll’s systems for both electrical and water-based installations. The products are easy to work with and kind to the health of the installer.
The pipes for water-based systems need to be laid first and then covered with a screed. Keracem Eco is perfect for this as it is designed to be used with heat-radiant slabs. It is fast drying, so you can tile on it after 24 hours.
When tiling over electrical heating systems on wooden substrates, use a layer of self-levelling compound such as Keratech Eco Flex. This is an eco-friendly product which is easy to lay and can be tiled on after 12 hours. It has a lifetime CFP of 130g of CO2 emitted per kg and very low VOC emissions.
Once the substrate is dry, you can fix the tiles. For this, we recommend using Kerakoll’s award-winning Biogel adhesives: pick No Limits for standard-set, or Revolution if you want a rapid-setting adhesive.
The Biogel range has been acclaimed by fixers as great to use. It consists of two formulations (standard setting Biogel No Limits and rapid setting Biogel Revolution) that can be used on any substrate due to the inclusion of new polymers to give them a high shear strength. They are easy and pleasant to work with as they stay the same

consistency as when you first mixed them even after a long period in the bucket. The mix doesn’t shrink due to the inclusion of a geo-binder, so you can make it the right thickness for the job and it is soft and easy to work with. The consistency means that the adhesives wet the entire tile as well as the substrate, giving an excellent bond and superior performance. They also have a very low environmental impact with low CO2 and very low VOC ratings, and a large amount of recycled material in them.
Finish the installation with Fugabella Color. Safe and easy to work with, this is a new generation Resina-cemento hybrid grout that has just been launched into the UK market. It does not contain Portland cement so it does not develop efflorescence. It has the same advantages as the Biogel adhesives, allowing you to mix it to your desired consistency, and will not dry out in the bucket. There are 50 different colours available, making it easy for you to pick one that fits with the colour scheme of the room.
