TILE & STONE EXHIBITION, COVERINGS, CELEBRATES


30TH ANNIVERSARY Coverings, the international tile and stone exhibition and conference, celebrated 30 years of success at this year’s event.


Held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Coverings opened its doors to an enthusiastic crowd from 9th


-12th April. To kick-start the


show’s 30th year, representatives from Ceramics of Italy, the Tile Council of North America, Tile of Spain, the Ceramic Tile Distributors Association, and the National Tile Contractors Association gathered for an official ribbon cutting ceremony.


In celebration of Coverings’ anniversary, attendees were greeted by music from the show’s 1989 launch year as they entered the convention center. A timeline with highlights from Coverings’ heritage further showcased the show’s longstanding history and recognised exhibitors who’ve participated annually.


On the show floor, the newly expanded Installation & Design Experience was abuzz as attendees explored demonstrations, interactive learning features, and inspiring vignettes showcasing the synergy between design and installation. This year, Tile Council of North America (TCNA), offered a new feature—

Rewarding the stand-out showcases amongst this year’s exhibitors, the show gave out 2019 Best Booth Awards to a small selection of stands. An esteemed panel of judges chose just six extraordinary displays from over 1,100 exhibitors based on their design, creativity, display of product, use of space and overall presentation.


Rock Star Awards


Honouring the best and brightest young talent in the tile and stone industry, the show also held the 2019 Rock Star Awards.


The awards continue Coverings’ mission to support industry growth by recognising young talent and fostering new opportunities. Since its inception five years ago, the programme has awarded dozens of young leaders, who have connected at Coverings through mentorship, networking and educational opportunities.


Coverings Rock Stars are nominated by colleagues in the tile and stone industry and reviewed by a committee of industry leaders. Eligible candidates must be under the age of 35 years and employed within one of the following professions: architect, designer, distributor, retailer, contractor/ installer, fabricator, specifier, trade association or manufacturer.


Installation & Design Awards


The show also announced the 10 projects that received the coveted Coverings Installation & Design (CID) Awards. The CID Awards celebrate outstanding achievements in the design and installation of tile and stone in both residential and commercial projects. Projects were evaluated on their execution, original usage and overall design and purpose


TILEMASTER’S GLYNN GRIFFIN CROWNED TTA


‘EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR’ Tilemaster Adhesives’ Glynn Griffin has received The Tile Association (TTA) ‘Employee of the Year’ Award 2019.


The coveted award was presented at the annual TTA Awards ceremony, which recognises excellence and achievement throughout the industry. Held at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole on 12th


April,


the Masquerade-themed event was hosted by rugby superstar, Kyran Bracken MBE, with awards presented across 17 categories.


The first member of Tilemaster’s flourishing Technical Team, Glynn is described as “lifting a room wherever he walks” by colleagues and friends. The proud Northerner started his career as a lorry driver before training to be a tiler and later moving on to teach tiling at Blackpool College, acquiring further skills. In 2015, he left teaching and became the first employee of Tilemaster’s Technical Team; an operation that still exists today, and is flourishing.


Mark Kelly, Tilemaster Adhesives’ Managing Director, commented: “We’re absolutely thrilled that Glynn’s received this award! His bounce, passion and enthusiasm for life – and for his job – is something that rubs off on us all! Winning projects were honoured on 10th April, in an award ceremony and reception at Coverings 2019 in Orlando. Sponsored by TileLetter, Contemporary Stone & Tile Design and Tile Magazine, grand prize winners were awarded $3,000, while eight category winners received a $2,000 prize. All winners were provided with a one-night stay in Orlando to attend Coverings 2019, where their projects were featured on display.
