MARBLE MANIA EDITOR’S PICK LARGER THAN LIFE

As previously stated, large-format tiles are also more sought-after than ever in homes now and marble translates particularly well on such a canvas. Offering a continuous design, large-format marble- effect tiles only add to the spa-esque, luxury feel.

“Not only is real marble often unaffordable for most people, it can also create application issues due to its extreme weight. Quite often, real marble will need to be applied to tile backer boards, or even require walls to be reinforced which is a timely and costly process.

“A great, affordable and practical alternative to consider is marble-effect porcelain. A computerised program prints the marble vein pattern with a ’natural’ variation from tile to tile; the reproduction is so accurate that our porcelain often gets confused for the real thing. Recent technological advances have also meant that marble-effect materials are

now available as big as 300cm x 150cm x 3 – 6mm thick, which gives a very impressive finish.

“The other great thing about porcelain is that, unlike real marble, it requires virtually no maintenance against scratching or staining and doesn’t need to be polished or sealed. It can also have anti-slip finishes applied making them ideal for bathrooms and wetrooms.”

- Chris Grainger, Managing Director at The Stone & Ceramic Warehouse

THE DARK SIDE

Whilst the bright white base colour may first spring to mind when you think of marble, there are many darker options, such as deep greys and even blacks, now available. Try pairing a dark marble floor with a bright pop of colour on the walls to create an effective contrast. Pink and grey, for example, is a particularly popular combination at the moment.
