WOOD & LAMINATE A Rural Retreat Wood flooring from Atkinson & Kirby was specified to help create a

Japandi-style interior at a Scottish residential development, creating a peaceful and calm country living environment just outside of bustling Edinburgh.

Located a short 15-minute drive from the heart of Edinburgh, Liberton Barns Townhouses capture the essence of rural living with the benefit of central city living.

The award-winning residential development comprises of three luxurious two-story homes in Liberton Brae, an exclusive and sought-after area of Edinburgh. This prime location enjoys expansive views overlooking the Royal Observatory and the surrounding nature reserve.

Designed by architectural studio LBA with the vision of Daryl Teague, Director of developer Glencairn Properties, Liberton Barns is a striking reinterpretation of the formerly derelict farm shed that once occupied the land. The concept behind the development was driven by the shed’s three-bay steel frame, which LBA chose to replace with a structurally- insulated panel frame.

This reimagined structural design allows for a contemporary layout with a fully glazed end gable wall, floor-to-ceiling windows, and central courtyard cored out of the form to create lightwells and external spaces for the property to open up into. With bedrooms on the ground floor, the open-plan living area on the first floor extends the entire length of the dwelling, so residents can fully immerse themselves in the breath-taking surroundings of the property.

As the idyllic surroundings and abundance of natural light were central to the architectural design at Liberton Barns, it was imperative that Glencairn Properties created an interior that enhanced these aspects of the development. A ‘Japandi’ style interior was therefore selected. Characterised by simplicity, minimalism and functionality, Japandi is the harmonious blend of Scandinavian and Japanese design which helps to connect living spaces with nature.

Along with the vaulted ceiling, glazing and natural stone surfaces, the flooring was integral to achieving the light and spacious interiors at Liberton Barns. Atkinson & Kirby, manufacturer of hardwood flooring, was selected to supply materials for this project. 360m2

site. At the Liberton Barns development, the rustic grain of the wood has created an aged aesthetic that is in-keeping with the site’s rich history, while the shiny matt lacquered finish prevents the wood from ageing, ensuring that the property maintains its contemporary look for years to come.

Elliot Tait, Head of Sales – Scotland for Atkinson & Kirby, commented on the project: “Manoa Oak, supplied for Liberton Barns, has worked in harmony with the designer’s palette and other innovative design choices. We have enjoyed working with LBA Architects and Glencairn on this project.”

The impeccably considered design of Liberton Barns has not gone unnoticed by architectural circles. The property received an EAA Award and was a finalist in the Scottish Home Awards, Scottish Design Awards and The Sunday Times British Homes Awards. Most recently, the property won an Innovation in Design Award.

Commenting on this prestigious award, a representative from Glencairn Properties said: “At Glencairn, we put design at the forefront of everything we do, and it is great to be recognised for this with the Innovation in Design Award.”

of Manoa Oak from Atkinson

& Kirby’s Contemporary collection was used throughout the property to complement the minimalist interior. Manoa Oak is a popular choice for open-plan residential properties as the delicate grain seeps through the chalky finish, creating a bright and airy aesthetic.

The Manoa Oak flooring runs through the entrance hallway and extends past the internal courtyard up to the living and dining areas. The seamlessness of the flooring creates a flawless transition from interior to exterior as it reaches the end gable wall and beyond.

When heritage properties are revamped, it is imperative that each aspect of the design is sympathetic to the history of the
