SPECIAL FOCUS PATTERN & COLOUR COMBINATIONS At One with Nature
Experts from flooring specialist Tile Town discuss the colour combinations set to be popular in the world of residential flooring in 2019, with an emphasis on the popular trend of nature-inspired interiors.
Nature has long been a source of inspiration for designers, but 2019 sees this trend taken up a notch. This year, interior colour palettes are curated to be reminiscent of the tones found in nature, and flooring is no exception. The most on- trend floors of the year will adopt natural tones coupled with tactile textures to reflect the beauty of the great outdoors.
The emergence of this trend is, in part, inspired by the increasing awareness of environmental issues. Collins dictionary even named ‘single-use’ the word of the year in 2018, so it is no surprise that wider culture, including interior design, will begin to feel the ripple effects of this in 2019. Trends which nod to the beauty of our planet seem fitting in a social climate which sees us focusing ever-more on protecting the world around us.
But, how will this translate for interior design? The most successful examples will use nature as a resource to reflect a more sustainable relationship between us and the planet. As a result, materials are inspired by, and reminiscent of, interior design of the past. Expect traditional materials chosen to reflect a simpler time. Flooring will experience a rustic renovation, inspired by a time when we were better connected to the natural materials around us.
The continuing trend for environmental awareness will also seep into the colour palette of floor design. Tap into this trend by opting for floor colours found in natural materials such as rustic reds. Or shades which reflect the beauty of nature itself; greens, blues and yellows.
Another contributing factor to this year’s must-have colour combos is the rise in Mexican design. Mexican designers and artists have been steadily growing in prominence in recent years and this was confirmed as Mexico City was named the World Design Capital of 2018. Following on from this, expect to see design and colours influenced by the South American country throughout the world of design. Think terracotta walls against bright blue skies and bold colours inspired by the colour schemes of traditional Mexican art.

Meanwhile, clashing colours and bold prints continue to reign supreme as the covetable Instagram ‘floor shot’ remains popular amongst online influencers. Mexican-inspired looks are the perfect update for this trend as Mexican design is traditionally dominated by pattern.
The world of flooring will adopt these trends in a number of ways. The bolder colours inspired by nature may seem a daunting prospect for interiors, but can actually be an effective way to divide rooms, not to mention create a unique, eye-catching space for visitors. If neutral tones fit the space’s existing style better, then interpret the
theme of nature to reflect this; choosing traditional rustic materials and shades such as terracotta stone.
Inspired by the intense green of rolling hills against the golden backdrop of the sun, verdant green and luminous gold is a combination that we can expect to see in the homes of the adventurous this year. Bring this natural beauty indoors by incorporating the colours into interior design. The contrast created by the colours will also act as an ideal way to separate a space.
Almost, but not quite, matching shades are another interiors trend which will dominate in 2019. Inspired by the blues of nature, complement blue flooring with furniture in a not- quite-matching shade for a chic look which still alludes to the beauty of nature.
Rustic reds work perfectly on floors and help to reflect both the trend of Mexican design and environmental awareness. If blues are too bold, then head for a simple terracotta floor with accent accessories in blue to replicate the landscape of Mexico.
Ensure your flooring is shared on social media by incorporating stand-out patterns which are worthy of a photo. Update your space and ensure similar flooring hasn’t already been scrolled past on Instagram by choosing patterns inspired by modern Mexican design.
