STEP INSIDE BATHROOMS A Comfy Comeback
Is carpet in the bathroom a thing of the past or can it still be practical in tod interior designers to cleaning specialists,
Once upon a time, carpet in a bathroom was commonplace in UK households; providing a cosy, and affordable options available, many homeowners are choosing alternative materials for their will see a carpet in any area exposed to excess moisture. Here at TRF, we got thinking about wh this debate to a panel of experts and this is what they had to say…
Never again! Sonia Pash, Founder of interior design and
building firm Temza
https://temza.co.uk/about/ Carpet in the bathroom is the single greatest design crime,
and one that will never gain redemption. The colour magnolia (which has pretty much been a swearword in the design industry for the last decade) will come back in fashion before carpet in bathrooms will. It’s not about aesthetics, it’s about basic practicality and hygiene, and carpet is just not a material that’s easy to maintain in a wet and humid environment, not even to mention staining.
We at Temza, completely understand that our clients would like to have something warm and cosy to step on, and loose, machine washable mats are perfect for that, so this is what we would specify in this case. We don’t think there is much of an argument, because there are so many styles of mats available, it’s easy to fit any interior style.
Of course, as a team of interior designers, we do love the look of a traditional freestanding bath tub with a cow hide and a stack of books laying in front of it, but it’s a look that a stylist might do for a photo shoot just to experiment with ideas, and not something that should actually be in people’s homes.

There are mixed feelings about having a carpet in the bathroom. Major concerns include bad odour and a lack of practicality, however there are also some great benefits.
Bad smell and mould are probably the most obvious reasons for leaving carpet out of the bathroom. As opposed to small rugs, which are easily washed or replaced, carpet is permanent and, over time, mould, mildew, and many harmful bacteria can develop as a result of moisture.
With time, the padding will likely become damaged and begin to erode. Floor panels and deeper parts of a floor could begin to rot, which will weaken the floor, and ultimately, the structural integrity of a house.
It is necessary to mention though, that all these can be avoided with good hygiene and maintenance methods.
There are some important benefits of having a carpet in the bathroom. The only thing better than a nice shower after a long day is having a nice, cosy surface to step out onto. Even if you aren’t taking a shower, the carpet will feel great in comparison to a cold, hard tile or laminate floor.
