SPECIAL FOCUS PATTERN & COLOUR COMBINATIONS Match Maker
Josh Burbidge, Director of flooring at Atkinson and Kirby, is an expert when it comes to wood flooring. Here, he gives his advice on how to help customers decide on the right flooring for their living space…
Colour is an important consideration when choosing an overall look for any room and, as an expert in your field, you will always be asked for an opinion or advice on what flooring will go with a preferred paint colour. There are so many factors to consider and, when each individual has their own style and preference, it’s often not an easy task.
With our flooring range at Atkinson and Kirby, we’ve taken time to understand the tones and colours that are best suited to particular types of wood, grain and finish. Flooring should not only complement but accentuate your home-styling as it becomes the centrepiece of your living space.
The latest trends are of course important when it comes to updating floors and consumers will always be influenced by what they see on social media, especially Instagram and Pinterest, looking to their favourite designers and influencers for inspiration on the latest trends, styles and must-haves to enhance their homes.
Seasonality also has a great bearing on decision-making, whether it be the bright and bold colours of spring and summer or dark, warm and cosy tones of autumn and winter.
Here at Atkinson & Kirby, we take trends seriously and have worked with designers and trend forecasters, looking at our entire range of flooring and understanding what colours and textures are best suited together.
One of the trends identified is a concept we are calling ‘Winter Desert’. The designs highlighted in this trend add a warmth to the cold we are currently facing, whilst adding the colour of summer that feels so far away.
Winter Desert is designed to take you on a journey along the Old Silk Road, an ancient network of trade routes that connected the East and West. It’s here where the different cultures have blended across the regions for centuries and this conjures up an image of an ‘urban nomad’ and links to an ancient, meditative way of living.
Using this concept, we focus on natural tones in the flooring combined with colours that have blended these different cultures, providing a comforting layer as an antidote to hectic modern life.
Colours conjure up images of busy winter bazaars and flooring has earthen, natural tones of the Middle East, including sand and greys. To add warmth and comfort to this type of flooring, we’d advise incorporating soft and cosy furnishings and accessories in rich jewel tones with splashings of brass, embracing a meditative mood.

Ordos Smoked Oak
Combining the natural tones of our engineered floor with sandy colours on the walls gives a great neutral palette to build upon. Adding furnishings in colours and textures associated with the Middle East will help to achieve the Winter Desert look.
There are three more design concepts created by Atkinson and Kirby including: Modern Revival, where the love of the classic inspires a new generation; Organic Future, a fusion of nature and tech in harmony; Homeland, celebrating the beauty in form and function.
